Our Story.

2014 – Bright Idea…

Founder Charisse Murphy realized that there were no community-based programs for youth in her community. The nearest community center was over 15 miles away and without public transportation access to her community, having youth from her community visit the community center was nearly impossible. The passion that Charisse has for youth empowerment, her history of working in girl services and the need of the community led her to develop a logic model to put her “bright Idea” on paper.

2015 – Feeling Empowered…

In the beginning of 2015, the logic model was complete! A design for EmPOWER ME had been created and it was ready to be presented to the community. EmPOWER ME connected with the local regionalized school district and the proposal of an after school program was accepted! EmPOWER ME attended an Elementary School’s Open House to get the feedback from parents in the community regarding a program designed to meet the needs of girls in their community. The response was an overwhelming “YES”, the community wanted this! November 2015, EmPOWER ME partnered with Indie Flix and American Girl Doll and hosted a screening of the film, The Empowerment Project. There were 65 participants to attend the screening, including both the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of schools.

2016 – Ready, Set, Go…

January 2015, EmPOWER ME held its first 7-week long program for fifth-grade girls. There were 7 girls who completed the program. February 2016, EmPOWER ME held a workshop titled, “What Beauty Means to You” at Clark University for over 30 high school aged girls enrolled in the Upward Bound Program. April 2015 EmPOWER ME held its second 7-week long program for fifth-grade girls. There were 15 girls who completed the program. August 2016, EmPOWER ME! and the local Middle School started the process of partnering to have an EmPOWER ME! group for 6th grade girls.
